Solgar L-Glutamine is made up of the amino acid L-Glutamine and is a major nutrient for intestinal, immune and brain health. It makes up nearly sixty percent of the body's total amino acid pool and is the highest concentrated amino acid in the bloodstream.
L-glutamine is the most prevalent amino acid in the bloodstream and is also found in high concentrations in skeletal muscle, lung, liver, brain and stomach tissue. Under certain circumstances the body's tissues need more glutamine than that supplied by diet and biosynthesis.
During metabolic stress (such as injury, starvation and prolonged exercise), intracellular glutamine levels can drop more than 50%, and it is under these circumstances that supplemental glutamine becomes necessary. Increased intestinal permeability, which can be caused by a number of factors including stress, the use ofglucocorticoids and constipation, can also increase the requirement for supplemental glutamine.
The gastrointestinal tract is continuously exposed to allergens and pollutants via diet, lifestyle and environmental exposure and therefore contains a large number of immune cells along its length. Glutamine's positive effects on the gastrointestinal tract appear to stem from its ability to 'feed' immune cells as well as mucosal cells thus supporting lymphocyte function.
Decreased plasma glutamine concentrations have been observed in endurance athletes after prolonged, strenuous exercise. This post-exercise glutamine depletion and associated immunosuppression may render the athlete more susceptible to infection. A study of 151 elite runners and rowers given glutamine (or a placebo) showed that the percentage of patients infection-free during the seven days was significantly higher in the glutamine group (81%) than in the placebo group (49%).
